Wisdom Teeth and the Future Dental Health for Teens

Wisdom teeth sound smart, but they can bring nothing but problems for the future dental health of teens. If left unaddressed, wisdom teeth can cause serious complications and dental problems as your teen’s jaw and mouth grow and develop with age.

At Northmed Dental, Dr AJ Salman and his team of talented and compassionate dental professionals are here to help make dealing with wisdom teeth less scary and more approachable.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

These teeth typically erupt (emerge) from the gums between the ages of 16-25, with these teeth representing the third and last set of molars. Although wisdom teeth usually emerge healthy and well-aligned, in some cases, they partially grow in, become impacted or crowd other teeth.

If orthodontic treatment is planned down the road, removal of the wisdom teeth is usually a good idea. The additional space in the jaw allows for better movement of the teeth and a more precise alignment and nicer end result.

What Is the Wisdom Teeth Removal Process Like?

At Northmed Dental we take great care to make sure all of our teen patients are well-informed, educated and know what to expect. We also do everything in our power to ensure your teen is comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.

The procedure itself is an outpatient surgery. The entire process generally lasts 45 minutes or less, and is carried out once the patient has been completely numbed with local anaesthetic. For more involved surgeries and/or if a patient needs additional sedation due to anxiety, we provide additional options to ensure they are fully comfortable from start to finish.

What are the Risks of Not Having Wisdom Molars Removed?

It may be tempting to avoid the problem, but this can lead to additional issues that could end up causing more harm than good. Potential complications and risks of not removing your teen’s wisdom molars include:

  • Inflammation and swelling
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Cysts
  • Tumours

Protect your child’s future dental health and well-being. Contact Northmed Dental today and let our team of talented dental professionals help protect the health and well-being of your teen’s oral health.
