Demand for Same Day Smile Makeovers in Auckland Increases with the Use of CEREC Dental Technology

Northmed Dental, one of the few dental clinics in Auckland investing in CEREC technology, reports an increase in demand by patients looking to achieve dental restorations in a single dentist appointment.

CEREC technology provides patients an alternative to waiting for crowns and dental veneers that have to be ordered from a 3rd party dental lab, thus reducing the time spent at the dental clinic. CEREC machines are often used as part of a smile makeover or to repair a damaged tooth.

When asked why the practice invested in this dental technology, Dr AJ Salman, the director & senior dentist at Northmed Dental says “We understand that many of our North Shore patients lead busy lives, and their time is valuable. They also expect an exceptional quality of dental work. We introduced the advanced Primescan digital technology along with the CEREC Primemill technology to address the two primary concerns of time and accuracy of the dental restoration. The CEREC system allows us to fully restore a tooth in a single office visit with exceptional accuracy and fit.” When asked why he chose CEREC technology from Dentsply Sirona, Dr Salman expressed “This particular brand of CEREC milling produces more accurate results, and the restorations are more detailed. The end result for our patients is outstanding. Whether they are getting a dental crown, a porcelain veneer or a smile makeover treatment, the quality of the end result exceeds the patient’s expectations.”

According to the Dentsply Sirona website, the CEREC Primemill machine utilses state-of-the-art technology and CAM strategies to produce premium chairside restorations easier, faster, and more precisely. As a result, the technology provides patients with a highly durable, natural-looking restoration without the need to have them created by an outside lab, which sometimes adds up to a fortnight and at least one more appointment. Using this particular machine, dentists are able to generate dental crowns or veneers in about one hour. Dr Salman adds “Patients tell us how happy they are to get their tooth sorted in one visit, and not having to worry about a temporary crown coming off.”

Dr Salman points out “Due to the high degree of accuracy provided by the technology, we are typically able to preserve more of the patient’s natural tooth structure when compared to traditional restoration methods. CEREC’s unique adhesive bonding structure securely seals the ceramic to the tooth structure while significantly reducing the risk of infection.”

To begin the CEREC process, Dr Salman uses the Primescan digital technology to capture precise images of the patient’s tooth. These images are then used to render a 3D model of what the new tooth will look like. Once the new design is finalised, the information is sent to the Primemill unit, where the restoration is carved out of a single piece of porcelain. This new crown or veneer is then securely bonded onto the prepared tooth. All restorations are colour-matched to the surrounding teeth so the new restoration blends in with the rest of the teeth. If used as part of a smile makeover, the colour of the porcelain can be modified to create a whiter brighter smile.
